The To-Do List

Here are a list of things that need to be done on the house, broken down by room. Things that have been sitting, waiting to be finished, mocking me on a daily basis. Ugh.

Living Room
1. Install trim around window
2. Crown molding
3. Fill nail holes and paint trim
4. Hang curtains (once Fiona is old enough not to climb them)
5. Finish spray-painting fireplace doors and re-install
6. Figure out what to do around the fireplace (tile? mantle surround?) and then do it
7. Fix door handle on closet
8. Organize closet (DVD's, CD's, books)
9. Figure out something to do about brick hearth (paint? resurface?)
10. Replace entry door (preferably something with blinds or curtains)

Master Bathroom
1. Sand walls and re-paint for a smooth finish
2. Install shower head and faucet
3. Seal grout in the shower
4. Install hardware (towel bars, toilet paper dispenser, etc)
5. Figure out some storage
6. Re-paint and hang door
7. Chair rail
8. Crown molding and baseboards
9. Fill nail holes and paint trim

Master Bedroom
1. Install last piece of crown molding
2. Replace window apron
3. Fill nail holes and paint trim
4. Hang curtains (again, once Fiona is older)
5. Install lighting in the closet
6. Fix bedroom door so it opens/closes quietly

Guest Room/Craft Room/Office
1. Touch-up paint
2. Baseboards
3. Replace window apron
4. Fill nail holes and paint trim
5. Hang curtains
6. Install closet rods and shelves
7. Hang closet doors

Dining Room
1. Install beadboard and chair rail
2. Crown molding and baseboards
3. Replace window apron
4. Fill nail holes and paint trim
5. Find and install a pretty chandelier

Entry Way
1. Finish installing trim
2. Touch-up paint around door
3. Crown molding
4. Install picture ledge
5. Fill nail holes and paint trim
6. Find and install a pretty light fixture
7. Install a new entry door (preferably something with windows)

Everywhere upstairs:
1. Fill nail holes in hardwood floor
2. Transitions wherever hardwood meets ceramic tile
3. Install quarter-round where the hearth meets the hardwood

The kitchen and main bathroom upstairs are on hold until the other small projects are finished, because those are going to be MAJOR overhauls. And this is just the upstairs, people!

While we have accomplished quite a bit in the past few months, there is still a loooooong way to go. *sigh*

Trimming Cabinets

After we got all the old floors removed, it was time to prep some cabinets for our built-in desk. We went with pre-fab kitchen base cabinets because they were already built and they were 15% off at Home Depot. Why did we want to install those before we laid the floor? Well, because kitchen base cabinets have a standard height of 36", and desks have an average height of 32", and we knew that the tile floor would add about 3/4" of height, so we wanted those base cabinets to sit as low as possible when all was said and done. We also decided to lower the cabinets even more by cutting them off from the bottom. Trim, trim, and more trim

Yeah you guessed it, this is an update about trim. We finally got James' tools back after he lent them to a friend, so we were able to put up the crown molding in the entryway and dining room. We were tired of messing with figuring out the right angles for crown (upside down and backwards?? WHAT?!), so we decided to cheat and get corner blocks: No, it's not meant to be the same color as the wall, it just looks close. It will get painted white.   If you're going to be hanging crown any time soon, we found that the easiest way is to find and mark your studs first, like so: Then, just start at one end with a pneumatic nail gun and work your way to the other end, putting in one nail on the bottom and one on the top at each stud. You can also use nails wherever it looks gappy. Yeah, that's an official term. The pressure from the pneumatic nail gun should suck most gaps closed. Spring Cleaning

Recently, I was inspired by someone close to me--we'll call him J--to do some heavy Spring Cleaning. I've always attempted to do this in the past, but have never been very successful. I always think, "What if I need this someday? I don't want to have to buy it again!" I think this stems from not always having the money to buy all the things I want, but that's another story... The idea for this came from J, who had recently been inspired to do some spring cleaning of his own. He is currently on a journey of finding the balance between "having" and "giving," as giving to those who are less fortunate is the Biblical mandate for all who claim to be Christians. How much is required of us? Do we need to give away everything and live amongst the poor, or are we allowed to enjoy some material possessions?
