New Windows and Doors

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaack! Things got crazy there for a while...we got a new puppy last April, and having two dogs proved to be a handful! Also, things at work got crazy as well. But I'm back, for now at least!

I wanted to share an update we did to our house. It wasn't very "DIY" but we're so happy with how it turned out, so I'm going to share it anyway. We decided to get all new windows! Our old windows were, of course, original to the house. Some of them were painted shut, our bedroom window needed to be propped up because it would slam shut when you opened it, and the screens were falling out of the others. It was time for a change!

Here are some before pictures:

Why yes, that IS a new front door...thanks for noticing!

Here's a photo of the gaping hole in our kitchen when they had ripped out the old window, before they had installed the new one:

Luckily, it was a beautiful fall day!

Here are some pictures of the progress...first, the new window is installed, but no trim yet:

Next, here's a picture of the window with most of the trim pieces installed. Luckily, it covered up all the old wood trim, so we didn't have to do any painting! They measured and cut each piece of trim on site so that it would fit perfectly:

And finally, here is what a completed window looks like:

AHHHH!! I love it so much! Why didn't we do this sooner?

So without further ado, here are the after pictures:

The small window (the bathroom window) is the only window we didn't spring for the grids...it was $50 each window for the grids, and this window being so small and on the back of the house, we just didn't think it was worth it.

We only have 6 windows on the main floor of our house, and 2 in the basement. In this round, we only had the 6 main floor windows replaced, so it didn't end up being all that expensive. We got them from Window World. And we even got a $500 energy credit from the TVA!

Also, we have since painted our shutters a new color as well! When we replaced the front door, we then had to re-paint the trim, which required us to re-paint the alcove, and then the shutters didn't make sense so we re-painted those too :) Here's a crappy cell phone picture of that:

Here are all the shutters painted:

And finally, here is the front alcove after we had settled on a paint color, and also installed our new storm door:

I don't believe I have a picture of the whole front of the house with the front alcove painted...I'll have to get on that!! Eventually, we want to paint the dental molding and any remaining beige trim on the house. We will wait until we get the roof replaced, because we will also get new gutters at that time.

There you have it...our new front door(s) and new windows. Slowly but surely, we are getting there! Next on the list to upgrade: back door and garage doors.

Comments

  1. The original windows do look fine, but I can see why you decided to upgrade them. You do not want to keep using windows that slam shut or need to be propped up. The new windows look great and are probably easier to use, and I love the paint job you did on the shutters. It is always relieving to make that necessary change to your home.
