Painting the Stripes and the Big Reveal

Image
I know, most "real" bloggers don't post on Sundays, but this is my blog and I do what I want! When we left off on Friday, I had just finished taping off the room in preparation for my stripes. Before I started painting on Saturday, I made sure the tape was smoothed out and stuck on all the edges so I didn't have any leakage. I didn't want to use my fingers because that was a LOT of tape to smooth, so I used the edge of a credit card. Notice I put my tape to the side of my chalk lines, so that the darker gray paint will cover them up. Next step was to decide how I wanted my stripes to start and end, where they would meet the solid (non-striped) walls. I didn't want the last stripe to carry over onto the solid wall, so I decided to do them opposite colors. I wrote D's and L's in pencil (for Dark and Light gray) to get me started in the corner where the stripe met the solid wall. Then I started with the light gray paint! The paint I chose is

Now I'm going to delve into the next few steps in painting the guest room. I decided I wanted to paint stripes in there, since it will someday be my creative space. It's kind-of the "woman cave," if you will. (James gets the garage!) My color scheme for this room is gray and purple, but like a dark, dusty purple, not Barney the purple dinosaur purple. There will also be black and white accents. My tri-color stripes are going to be white, gray, and lighter gray. So, painting 3 different colors of stripes might seem like a daunting task, but I did them once about 8 years ago in the bathroom at my parents house. I did those the hard way, and now I know the easy way, so I'm going to share it with you! My first experience with stripes went something like this: I knew I wanted black, white, and pink. The walls were already white, so I taped off for the black stripes, then I taped off for the pink stripes...this process took me a VERY long time, and LOTS of paint

Yes...as the title suggests, this room has a lot to live up to! Lately, it has just been a collect-all for extra furniture or other items for which we don't have a specific place yet. NO MORE! As part of my own personal "Dude, Get On that Already" challenge (inspired by Young House Love's challenge of the same name ), I decided to take matters into my own hands and paint this room, so we can actually start using it. Part of it was inspired by my need to empty the extra bedroom (read: my storage room) at the house I'm renting, and since I have nowhere to put it, it ended up in James' garage. Buuuuut I know that's going to drive him crazy, since the garage is his "man space." Since most of it is stuff I haven't been able to use recently (scrapbooking supplies, sewing machine, other small projects I've been wanting to tackle) I thought it might be nice to go ahead and put them in their forever home--the guest/craft/office room!
