Basement Moodboard

Now that you've seen some of the progress on our basement remodel, I wanted to give you a taste of our vision for that space. First off, you've seen that the walls are painted beige, with white trim. Pretty traditional stuff. The floors will be a wood-grain ceramic tile, similar to this:

This is not the exact tile we have, but it's as close as I could find...we got ours at a discount flooring outlet and bought all that they had. I'm not even sure what brand they are. But they are oblong ceramic tiles just like this that look like wood grain. They are all the same length, so we will stagger them to make it look like a hardwood floor, with very small grout lines.

Since this will be a ceramic tile floor directly on a cement floor in a basement, the floor will be very cold. We couldn't afford the underfloor heating (it's about $179 for a 1' by 20' roll), so instead I have ordered a large area rug. RugsUSA was having their 80% sale again, which doesn't happen all that often, so I went ahead and ordered this puppy:

It is 7'6" by 9'6" and was $236 with free shipping. Can't beat that! It's a 100% hand-hooked wool rug. We have a similar rug in our dining room and we love it!

Then, we will have to save our pennies for a new sofa. We are loving the idea of a sectional because it adds so much more seating without taking up too much space. We love the Karlstad from IKEA:

It's about 9' wide, and it's pretty much the biggest sofa we can fit in the space. My favorite bloggers John and Sherry over at YHL have the same sofa, and they love it! They've had it for about 2.5 years and so far it is still holding up to their 3-yr-old daughter and an active Chihuahua. I love the fact that all of IKEA's sofas have removable/washable slip covers, and a 10 year warranty.

Finally, at one end of the room we are building a built-in desk with shelves. Since there aren't enough rooms in the house to turn one into an office, this will be our compromise. We think it will actually add some value to our home. This is somewhat our inspiration for the desk:

We are using pre-fab kitchen cabinets that we got 20% off at Home Depot for the base. We have shortened them slightly, since they are a bit higher than standard desk height (36" vs. 30"). Then we will build a counter top by staining some oak or pine boards--we don't have that all figured out yet. We will build shelves up to the ceiling, leaving the center open for a cork board or something similar. And of course I'll accessorize with some cute office accessories!

The curtains will be vertical navy/white stripes, actually made out of a West Elm duvet cover that I got 90% off a while back.

The bedroom in the basement will actually have the same duvet cover on it (I bought two!), as soon as I get around to converting a King size duvet down to a Full.

The rest of the room will be accessorized with blue, mint green, and red. Here are a few of the accessories I already have...

Because I love my husband, I'm gonna let him hang some Chicago Cubs artwork in here as well...and also because it goes with the color scheme :)

I'm getting SO excited to see it all come together!!
