A Spare Bedroom

I finally got around to taking pictures of the downstairs bedroom!! It's been done since right before Christmas. Our first overnight guests were my sister and her husband and kids.

Come on in...

First, let's talk about the bed. Penny thinks it's very comfortable!

It's a double bed that we bought from my former roommate when she moved to NYC and sold all her belongings. We didn't get a headboard because I have that old window frame hanging on the wall behind the bed. The ceilings are low in the basement, so I didn't want the walls to be too busy. The duvet cover on the bed is one that I picked up on clearance from West Elm for $20. It was originally a king sized, so I had to sew it down to a double-sized duvet. I don't have any pictures from that process, but basically I laid the comforter on top of the inside-out duvet and pinned around it, then I just sewed along the pins. Once I confirmed that the comforter fit inside, I cut off the excess fabric on the inside. I was able to maintain the original opening across the top of the duvet, which made it a super easy sewing project.

You may have also noticed in the first picture that the bed is up on risers. This is because we wanted to keep our twin-sized mattress to provide more sleeping for guests. Since my family comes and stays with us a lot, we thought the twin-sized mattress would be great for my sister's kids. So we put the bed up on risers and slid the mattress under it. It doesn't look great, but it works!

Next, let's talk about the new bookshelf in this bedroom.

When we removed the shelves from the basement living room, we had put all the books in boxes. We decided a bookshelf would fit great in this bedroom. We originally were going to get a cheapy bookshelf from Target, but we decided to just go ahead and order a nicer one and be done with it. I ordered this one from Target.com (got free shipping and 5% off with my Target debit card!) while it was on sale. I think we paid around $90 for it.This shelf mostly contains my book collection: Harry Potter, Twilight, Chronicles of Narnia, etc. And also my yearbooks and photo albums. You know, all the important stuff.

Now let's take a look at the other side of the room:

So at the foot of the bed, we put a dresser. We got this one at IKEA for $129. We compared all the other white dressers at the store, and this one seemed to look the nicest and was also the best price. J keeps his running gear in the top 3 drawers, and we keep spare blankets and sheets in the bottom drawer. The red chair was a trash pull (score! we have 2 of them). The mirror and lamp were items we already had. The white shelves on the wall are a set I've had forever...I think I bought them from my cousin's yard sale for $5!

The intention of this room originally was to be a "Nashville" room. I wanted to decorate with some Hatch Show Print posters that I have, and I wanted to get some things from the Loveless Cafe to hang as well. Those things haven't happened yet, but in the meantime we have hung things on the wall that all have meaning to us.

Top left is a police shadow box that my mother gave to J for Christmas a couple years ago. This is meaningful to us because J is a police officer, and I'm very proud of him :) Top right is a picture of a sailboat...while I've never actually been on a sailboat, it reminds me of Lake Michigan, which is where I was raised. Bottom left is a picture I took of the sunset when I was riding one of our towboats, so it reminds us of my livelihood and how important the inland rivers are to us. Then finally, bottom right is a picture I took of the Tennessee state sign when I first visited Nashville for my interview. I had no idea when I took that picture that in a few short months, I would be leaving my family and moving somewhere completely unfamiliar, where I would eventually meet my husband and start my own family.

This room has been a long project, and is still a work in progress. I do still eventually want to get our Hatch Show Prints on the wall in there. We still have some lighting issues to figure out in here. The room only has one ceiling light fixture, but the ceiling is not level so the light doesn't diffuse around the whole room. We also have some work to do on touch-up paint, but other than that the major parts of this room are DONE!

Come and visit us anytime, we now have TWO functioning guest rooms (and an extra twin mattress). Hope to see you soon!
